Public School Test Scores
Following are test scores and rankings for Santa Monica public schools according to the Academic Performance Index statewide scores for 2013.
Please read the following explanation carefully. The meaning behind these test scores is misunderstood and misreported frequently.
API Score: A three-digit number on a scale from 200 to 1000. This score is based on tests administered to public school students each Spring.
State Rank: Schools are ranked into "deciles" based on their raw API scores, with the top ten percent receiving a 10, the next ten percent receiving a 9, and so forth.
Similar School Rank: Schools are then compared to the 100 most similar schools in the state. Elementary schools are compared only to elementary schools, middle schools compared only to middle schools, high schools compared only to high schools. The 100 "most similar" schools are identified using criteria including size, family income, parental education level, and students' knowledge of English.
The API score are only ONE factor in identifying the quality of a school. Because it is a simple easy-to-understand measurement, it is reported here to give prospective home buyers an initial point of departure for their own in-depth investigation of schools.
